With the Covid-19 pandemic putting a stop on all footballing activities in March, the Champions League 2019/20 also had to be halted. But with the domestic leagues starting again last month, the Champions League restarts 7th August. By then all the domestic competitions would have ended for the clubs and players to focus on the Champions League. As we have already started with the competition, we thought it would be a good time for the FootballChacha 2019/20 Champions League predictions.

Juventus vs Lyon

The French side has a slender 1-nil lead over Juventus in the first leg of the tie. The second leg of the tie will be at Turin, and we think the firepower of Juventus will be too good to handle for Lyon. The French side haven’t played competitive football since March, as the Ligue-1 was cancelled due to the pandemic. They will take time to settle down again, but the Italian side look set to take revenge in the second leg. Time and again Ronaldo has proven that he and his team should never be cut-off looking at a first leg result. The talismanic Portuguese will be ready to overturn the first-leg deficit and pull off another comeback for the Old Lady.

Manchester City vs Real Madrid

The Manchester side have a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid in the first-leg which was held in the Santiago Bernabeu. But, the Madrid side have been great defensively and won the La Liga this season which will be a huge boost to their confidence. The Los Blancos have won a lot of games with a scoreline of 1-0 or 2-0 this season, which underlines their problem in scoring goals. On the other hand, the City side have been shambles defensively and have lost unexpected games this season. This game will be very interesting to watch especially for the neutrals, but we predict that the City side might just have the edge over Real Madrid and will go through with the away goal rule.

Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

This tie is pretty much dead and over as Bayern romped past Chelsea in the first-leg with a scoreline of 3-0. Chelsea have been poor going forward and are even worse defensively, making it the easiest tie to predict. Bayern Munich will go through with ease.

Barcelona vs Napoli

The Catalunya side came away with a goal at Naples, as the first tie was a 1-1 draw. With a certain Lionel Messi in the side and Antoine Griezmann finally clicking, we predict that the Barcelona side might just win against Napoli, in the Camp Nou. Gattuso’s Napoli side haven’t attacked well enough this season thus a resilient Barcelona defence should be able to stop them. Taking all the factors into consideration, we predict Barcelona to come out victorious in the tie.

Quarter-Finals

Atalanta vs PSG

Atalanta have played superbly well in the Serie-A, and are the dark-horse in the Champions League this season. The free-scoring Italia side have gone past everything that has come its way and will face PSG in the quarter-finals. PSG will be without Mbappe, who is out with injury but the likes of Neymar and Icardi might to be too much for the Atalanta defence. This match will surely be a goal-fest as both sides are great going forward. We predict PSG to outscore the Atalanta side and win the tie marginally.

RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid

The German side have played well throughout the course of the season in the Bundesliga as well as the Champions League. But, they will be without their talisman, Timo Werner, who has joined Chelsea lately. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid have been stout as ever defensively, and have produced the goods going forwards as well. The Rojiblancos beat holders Liverpool in their Round of 16 tie, and are considered as one of the favourites in the league. Leipzig will find it very hard to score against the Atletico side, and we predict that the Madrid-based side will go through to the semi-finals.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have been rampant this season in all the leagues and cups they have played in, be it Bundesliga or the Champions League. Robert Lewandowski is the leading scorer in the top-5 leagues of Europe and shows no signs of stopping. With Lewandowski spearheading the attack for Bayern, the Barcelona defence will have a tough task at hands. The Barcelona attack show signs of a renaissance but haven’t done a lot to cause problems for the opposition. If Messi will be kept quiet, Bayern Munich will win the match with relative ease.

Manchester City vs Juventus

Manchester City have a weak defence, but their midfield is arguably the best in Europe. Pep’s tactics and De Bruyne’s magic from the midfield have been overwhelming for some defences. Whereas, Juventus have been struggling to get results in the league lately. They have scored many scrappy goals and we predict even Cristiano Ronaldo can’t help Juventus’ chances to win the competition. We predict that the blue-side of Manchester will go through the semi-finals if they are able to keep a certain Ronaldo at bay.

Atletico Madrid vs PSG

SF1

This game will be one of the tightest to predict in the Champions League. Expect PSG to attack from the onset and Atletico Madrid to defend and be in shape. Neymar and Mbappe have to be at their best to go through the Atletico defence and then their goalkeeper Jan Oblak. PSG haven’t played since March and might find it difficult to cope with the likes of Alvaro Morata and Felix. We predict that Atletico Madrid will win the match, by one goal, and will go through the finals.

Man City vs Bayern Munich

SF2

The City midfield and defence will be ready to face a free-scoring Bayern Munich side and Lewandowski in particular. Bayern seem to be the only side to have a midfield that can match Manchester City’s midfield. Kimmich and Goretzka have been on form since the restart and will be ready to take the City side head-on. With Lewandowski’s goals and City’s defences sorrows, we predict a Bayern Munich win.

Final

Bayern Munich vs Atletico Madrid

Final

The final of the Champions League will be very intriguing if these two sides make it through. With Bayern’s attacking prowess and Atletico’s defensive solidity, most of the match will probably be played out in Atletico’s half. Bayern’s defence has pace with Alaba and Alphonso Davies.  This will make it difficult for Atletico to break on the counter. A big chance for Atletico will be through set-pieces. If Bayern are able to manage those, the win will be there for the taking.
